You’re seven weeks into consistent calisthenics training, following a workout plan suggested by your “for you page”. Despite the effort, you see very minimal progress, which doesn’t equate to the effort you’ve been putting in.

Starting calisthenics as a beginner can be daunting and confusing; you’ll see reels on your social media overflowing with fancy exercises and workout plans. The new journey can be overwhelming when you don’t know the basic exercises to start with or workout plans to follow that work best for your lifestyle without getting burned out or losing consistency.
Both men and women face challenges when starting this sport, but progress can look different depending on biological factors such as muscle distribution, hormonal influence and recovery speed. Moreover, female bodies generally demonstrate lower body strength and endurance, while male bodies tend to build upper-body muscles faster (Holdsworth et al., 2026).
For women, the menstrual cycle throughout the month and hormonal fluctuations across the cycle can slightly influence the training process and have highly individual effects (Sports Medicine, 2020).
In this article, we will understand the differences in female and male bodies, the factors that affect the training journey, and how and why to implement a workplan that works best for you as a woman. Calisthenics is heavily upper-body dominant (pull-ups, push-ups, dips, muscle-ups), and women' s upper muscle distribution compared to men is relatively less. It can make building pushing and pulling movements the first hurdle when doing a body weight sport.

How do you formulate a workout plan that really works for you?
This is the suggested plan for beginners; we’ll take a month as a cycle as an example
Consistency: 3 sessions per week / 45 - 60 minutes each with warm-up included

For female beginners, the menstrual cycle is a natural training rhythm:
Follicular, best for strength and endurance.
Ovulation, skill and explosive practice, but protect joints.
Luteal, lighter intensity, focus on recovery and mobility.
The specific benefits include hormonal balance, which can ease PMS symptoms such as regulating mood swings, etc. Physically, exercises (push-ups, squats & dips) help maintain bone density, which is important because it reduces the risk of osteoporosis as we age. Besides the physiological aspect, when you master bodyweight exercises. There’s a deeper connection built between the mind and body, which builds stronger confidence.
The benefits Callisthenics offers for women are more than just strength, endurance, and mobility. Formulating a plan aligned with your cycle helps reduce fatigue, improve recovery, and maximise strength effectively.
Beginner common mistakes that could lead to injuries:
1) Not warming up properly Joint mobility and dynamic stretches prevent injuries 2) Resting too short between sets (listen to your body) Less time for breaks can make you weak and fatigued, and technique breaks down 3) Skipping progressions Jumping from push-ups to muscle-ups can increase the chance of injuries 4) Repetition of the same exercises Repeating the same sets of exercises can slow down progression Starting calisthenics as a beginner can feel like the progress is slow despite the consistent effort. The factors like muscle distribution, hormonal influence and recovery speed affect the training journey for females, but it completely depends on the individual and to what extent. Formulating a workout plan that aligns with your cycle helps reduce the side effects of training Calisthenics.
The goal isn't to unlock flashy moves right away, but to master the basics first by respecting and listening to your body's rhythm.
With patience, smart programming and cycle awareness, women can push through it and thrive in this sport of bodyweight training.
