Refined regressions for 90-degree push up (My WIP)

Overhead pressing has always been my weakness, compounded by a slight congenital flaw in my wrists. For years, these factors led me to avoid movements like the 90-Degree Push-Up and Planche. As I passed 30, I noticed a subtle shift—a growing hesitation to take risks and a silent drift into self-limitation. However, years of dedicating myself to mobility training gave me a new perspective: I am not done growing, nor am I getting old. Free from the need to compare myself with others, I simply know I can become a better version of myself.
Standard tutorials and cookie-cutter progressions found online fell short of my specific needs. I needed finer adjustments tailored to my own mechanics. Below, I’d like to share my work in progress which is 2 modified regressions I am currently working on, along with their key insights:
A. 90-Degree Push-Up Eccentric (Negative)
Working through eccentric contractions is almost always a reliable pathway. My goal is to execute the complete movement in its most refined form when I am fresh.
Setup: Perform a back to wall handstand from a room's corner, leaving enough clearance to lean forward into the incline.
Benefits:
1. Prevents Excessive Lower-Back Arching & Loss of Balance:
Unlike free handstands where energy is often wasted kicking up or falling over, this setup keeps every step deliberate and precise, preventing bad motor habits. Starting from a straddle handstand in the corner also prevents the posture from turning into a super banana handstand.
2. Corner Wall as a Spatial Reference:
Because the 90-Degree Push-Up demands a significant forward lean, reps often end in a sudden collapse. I measure the setup distance in advance using a bent-arm planche hold.
Starting from a straddle handstand, the target during the forward lean and descent is to lightly touch the corner wall with the crown of my head.
B. Pole-Supported Handstand Push-Up
In movement mechanics, the shoulders and hips work in tandem ("shoulder aligns with hip"). Considering the force output required for shoulder external rotation and adduction ("tucking the elbows"), I realized the suspended lower limbs could engage in a complementary activation pattern.
Setup: Find a solid vertical pole. Place your hands about one forearm’s length away, kick up into a handstand facing away from the pole, and squeeze the inside of your feet/legs around the pole.
Benefits:
1. Engaging Hip Adductors for Synergistic Force:
To compensate for strength limitations while building familiarity with the handstand push-up (the first half of the 90-degree descent), squeezing the pole unloads a portion of body weight and significantly increases stability.
2. Pole as a Spatial Reference:
Just like setup A, the top of the head aims for light contact with the pole during the forward lean and descent.
Closing Thoughts
We are dynamic beings, and our training practice should be equally alive and adaptable. I am going to master the 90-degree push-up step by step ✌️
